Many, as this year's Sunday Times Parent Power disk demonstrates, are excellent schools. Three of our seven Schools of the Year are Catholic schools, the North Cheshire Jewish Primary School tops the state primary league table, and the Haberdashers' Aske's School for Boys in Elstree, which is proud of its predominantly Christian-Jewish-Hindu mix, is the highest achieving independent preparatory school. Why is this? The sceptics and secularists think the answer is obvious. These are middle-class schools. Their parents are pushy middle-class parents who play the system.
